Dudeltopf
Pictured here is a sampling of my current work in process. The pieces range from approximately 1/2" to 3" in height.
Dudeltopf is a collection of over 1,000 small, hand-built ceramic forms, examining clay as a medium for doodling. I'm questioning the understanding of doodling as an idle, frivolous, and peripheral activity. By adopting “doodle” as the language of my work, I allow myself to indulge in the process of making towards no particular end. This allows the work to develop without the pressure of executing a pre-determined plan, freeing me from the notion that I have to begin with an “artistic vision.” Rather, it is revealed through continuously working with my hands; creative fidgeting translated into physical form.
I once thought of doodling like this: the thing you find yourself doing when you should be doing something else. It was secondary, to be put aside when it was time for the real work. Now, it is the thing I should be doing. Doodling is my work.
